You Don't Own Your Brand and the metamorphosis of Ice Cube

N.W.A. brought the LA gangsta rap genre to the mainstream. The Muppets have delighted children and adults with clever and wholesome entertainment. Mash them up and here’s what you get. (NSFW – Language; Hat Tip Matt Yglesias)

I’m guessing Jim Henson didn’t envision a future in which Kermit the Frog intones ‘F*ck the Police!’ but that’s what you’ve got here, and putting aside any arguments regarding the song itself and race in America, it is a pretty amusing video. No matter how much you try to protect your brand and regardless of how hard you work to craft your image, somebody out there is going to be able to do something like this.

Now here’s the real irony, Ice Cube, a founding member of N.W.A. has so completely evolved his personal brand that he now stars in films aimed at the same audience as the Muppets. His is one of the truly amazing stories in the American entertainment industry. His first solo album was titled AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted. This past weekend he was in the audience at Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards.
