The (Sports Marketing) World is Flat, Special Edition

Interesting story that ran today courtesy of Reuters on cricket being played in New York high schools. There is a sanctioned league with 14 schools participating. And while you would expect kids of Carribean or Indian descent to participate, it turns out some red-blooded Amerericans are trying it out as well.

No, it’s not going to replace baseball, football or basketball anytime soon. But this represents an interesting opportunity to get close to consumers through their passions, and cricket is just about the only sport through which you are going to reach that segment of the population.

I’d love to see a proper cricket match, whether an ODI or a Twenty20, played at the Mets’ or Yankees’ ballpark. If you had the West Indies play India in an exhibition, you would sell out in less than five minutes, charging just about any price for tickets that you care to.
