Eyecube: A journey in branding

1 Jun 2009 by Rick, 3 Comments »

Several months ago I challenged the notion of personal branding, suggesting that there is more value in creating something external to yourself that brings value to others. In other words, juicing up ”followers” numbers on Twitter or “friends” on Facebook simply for your own personal gratification seems like a pretty hollow victory. Part of my effort with Eyecube is to provide value by sharing the great work of others or by adding my own ideas to the marketing discussion mix.

Part of the reason I call this site Eyecube, and not Rick Liebling’s blog is because I didn’t think the focus should be directly on me. The content on this site often reflects views, opinions and insight from others as well. Do I want more traffic to the site? Sure, that would be great, and, to be honest, I do feel as though I’ve hit something of a plateau.  I’m sure many brands (and bloggers) go through this and I’ve been thinking about several new ways that I can push the Eyecube concept to the next level.

I’d like to do that in a transparent way in hopes of providing insight into the process. I have several things in mind, including buying a URL and jumping off the eyecube.wordpress platform. I’m also toying with the idea of writing a book (an e-book really, nothing too crazy), and finally, I’m working on getting a logo.

Do I really need a logo for Eyecube? No, but logos and logo design are always interesting topics for brands, and I’ve often written about this issue (see my take on recent Pepsi efforts here). So, when I was recently contacted by Logo Inn I decided to have some fun.

DISCLOSURE: I’ve struck a deal with Logo Inn regarding the creation of a Eyeycube logo. They’re making one for me in exchange for the opportunity to have some guest posts on the site. No cash will change hands and I’ll be open and honest in my discussions on the experience. I hope that together we can take you through the process so you’ll have a better understanding of how this sort of thing works.

We’ll go on this journey together and I encourage you to ask questions and post comments. Look for a post from Logo Inn on Tuesday as I go on a journey in branding.
