The Future of Social Media? - From David Armano

Yesterday I commented on Geoff Livingston’s Death of Social Media post. Earlier today he clarified his post and it certainly helped me better understand his position. Beyond our back and forth, Geoff raises an interesting point regarding innovation and the future of Social Media.  David Armano has a really intriguing post where he talks about Social Business Design. What’s that? It’s the concept of businesses not just using technology for the purposes of enhancing communications, but using it across all elements of business to advance overall business objectives. Please read the post, I’m not sure I’m doing David justice here.

As I read Armano’s post I think I have a better understanding of where Geoff Livingston is coming from. David is talking about a fundamentally different way of using Social Media technologies.  Geoff and Joe Jaffe did a brief video chat on Geoff’s blog where they called for more philosophical conversations. I think David’s post is a great jumping off point for that.

Before shooting my mouth off on the subject I’d like to give it a lot more thought. The concept is very intriguing but I also see challenges with the application in the real world, especially with large organizations.  The organizational DNA of a company like say, McDonalds or The Gap may have trouble making this sort of change – like a host body rejecting an organ transplant. I think we’ll see these sort of issues being discussed more in the future and I think it will make us all smarter.

  1. Rick – I like David’s take as well. And I like that he’s tackling the collaboration and collective intelligence aspect of business. There’s a whole world out there involved in this: Enterprise 2.0. Looking forward to seeing David and the Dachis team being part of that movement.

  2. We’re all good, Rick. Thank you for your persistence in discussing this issue. Best wishes!
