Mitt Romney Needs A Chief Culture Officer

Tags: , ,

It’s pretty obvious when a brand just doesn’t get it. They do things like change their packaging, not realizing that people liked the old packaging. Or they fail to understand what people are looking for in prime time entertainment. Mitt Romney, the brand, is having the same problem.  We saw it a few months ago with this comment regarding the hiring of illegals (starts around 1:56):

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

He’s running for president for Pete’s sake!

Romney was so caught up in getting away from the illegals, he completely failed to avoid falling into a bigger problem: bald-faced ambition.  Having an illegal immigrant mow your lawn people understand. Getting rid of him because you’re going to run for president? Not what the country wants to hear.

Once again this weekend Romney signalled his inability to understand the fundamental nature of the voter.  Again at a debate, Romney made this offer to Rick Perry:

If you can see this, then you might need a Flash Player upgrade or you need to install Flash Player if it's missing. Get Flash Player from Adobe.

Who is this guy, Diddy? Who does that? Who makes a $10,000 wager over something trivial like that besides Michael Jordan?  That’s a lot of money, especially in Iowa, where the debate took place. You get the feeling Mitt probably had the 10K in his Gucci wallet.

The great politicians, regardless of party, have an understanding of the electorate. They don’t have to be salt of the Earth to understand salt of the Earth. I’m not making any comments about Romney’s political ideas here, just noting that he needs to have a Chief Culture Officer on his team.

Rick, I was at a conference and found myself standing beside a Republican strategist.  I said something like “you guys need a Chief Culture Officer.”  I spend the next couple of minutes saying what I meant, what a CCO is.  He spend the next couple of minutes demonstrating that he got EXACTLY what I had just said, and gave a compelling argument of his own.  Somebody at HQ agrees with you.

2012 is going to be a very difficult year for politicians of all stripes and parties. How do you court the 99%, a group that could quite easily build real momentum, when every politician on the national stage is quite obviously a member of the .01%. Every single media and/or public appearance is going to be a potential landmine.
